In the following discussion I propose the use of UBL and XAdES to create a verifiable, auditable, and traceable history of a document to meet an identified user requirement asked of me regarding MLETR (the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Record):
I suggested that some MLETR committee standardize some identification semantic for "the previous version of this document" that then would be used in the creation of a subsequent version. It is absent in the first version of the document.
Can we discuss standardizing a new ASBIE or every document type that represents this semantic? Since every document type has the <cac:Signature> ASBIE, I was thinking <cac:PriorVersionAttachment>.
I acknowledge that some document types already have a generic attachment at the top level, such as UBL-Enquiry. This proposed ASBIE would be standardized so that any software supporting the methodology I've proposed above (or something like it) would be able to:
- create a base64 encoding of the given version of the signed document
- embed that under <cac:PriorVersionAttachment> of the next version
- modify the document as required for the next version
- digitally sign the next version
Recipients can unravel the document to any prior version while having the signature records of every version creation.
