When generating HTML from Word, the less-than-or-equal sign (≤) in a Word document is [sometimes?] generated as:

<span style='font-family:Symbol'>£</span>

instead of the canonical HTML code:

&le;

(hex #8804).

In the Chrome browser, this shows up as the expected symbol, but in Firefox and Waterfox, the pound sterling sign is displayed.
