I know we probably had this discussion way back, but in MQTT a client can set the Keep Alive to 0 to switch it off. If you want to almost achieve this, you can set a Keep Alive value of the maximum - 18 hours, so it seems pointless to deny implementations the ability to choose to do this, as well as maintaining compatibility with MQTT.
