Clear English-language summary of the specification:
SMP 2.0 is the successor to the SMP 1.0 OASIS Standard. Key upgrades include
an
expanded and more flexible data model to support a wider range of business
scenarios, an improved extension model to align with other OASIS work
products,
and refactoring of the XML data model to align with the UN/CEFACT Core
Component
Technical Specification (CCTS).
SMP describes a protocol for publishing service metadata within a 4-corner
network. In a 4-corner network, entities are exchanging business documents
through intermediary gateway services (sometimes called Access Points). To
successfully send a business document in a 4-corner network, an entity must
be
able to discover critical metadata about the recipient of the business
document,
such as types of documents the recipient is capable of receiving and methods
of
transport supported.
Relationship of this specification to similar work: SMP provides critical
metadata to discover supported business documents and processes, such as
those
defined by the OASIS UBL TC, and to discover supported messaging protocols,
such
as those defined by the OASIS ebXML Messaging Services TC.
